1. Grote Sluis te Spaarndam

Vroeger was de Grote Sluis de scheiding tussen het Spaarne en het IJ. Tegenwoordig scheidt de sluis het Spaarne en Zijkanaal C. Doordat Zijkanaal C rechtstreeks in verbinding staat met het Noordzeekanaal is het water hier zilt. Ziet u het verschil in waterpeil? Het waterpeil in Zijkanaal C is 40 centimeter onder NAP. Het Spaarne staat op 61 tot 64 centimeter onder NAP. De sluis behoudt het veilige waterpeil en voorkomt dat er een teveel aan zout water binnendringt. Zowel de recreatievaart als de beroepsvaart vaart via de Grote Sluis van het Noordzeekanaal richting Haarlem en Leiden.
