25. Afdamming

In het betonnen fundament van de voetgangers- en fietsbrug waar we nu onderdoor varen zijn sponningen te zien. Door stalen balken in de sponningen te plaatsen kan de Leidsevaart worden afgesloten. Dit is slim bij calamiteiten zoals overstromingen. Door het water tegen te houden kunnen waterschade en vervuilingen worden voorkomen. In 2018 gebruikte Rijnland deze afdamming om de instroom van zilt water vanuit Spaarndam en Haarlem richting de bollenstreek te beperken. Deze maatregel was nodig vanwege de droogte. De boezem wordt continue doorgespoeld met zoetwater. Als er een zoetwatertekort is loopt het zoutgehalte in het water op. De afdamming op deze plek houdt dit proces tegen en is slechts een van de vele compartimenteringswerken van Rijnland. We varen verder in noordelijke richting. Zo komen we via Heemstede in Haarlem. De Leidsevaart verandert ondertussen van een watergang in landelijk gebied naar een door kademuren ingesloten vaart in stedelijke omgeving. Aan BZ staat de Kathedrale basiliek Sint Bavo.
