11. Oude Gouwe door de stad

Net na de Grote Spoorbrug is de splitsing in de Gouwe zichtbaar. In de dertiger jaren is het Nieuwe Scheepvaartkanaal, ook wel Gouwekanaal genoemd, om Gouda heen aangelegd. Het Gouwekanaal is gegraven in de jaren 1932 tot 1936 in het kader van de werkverschaffing. Werklozen konden zich zo nuttig maken. Zo’n 300 mannen hebben met niets meer dan een schop en een kruiwagen het Gouwekanaal uitgegraven. Toen het kanaal werd opgeleverd, werd de scheepvaart tussen Amsterdam en Rotterdam een stuk makkelijker en sneller. Het Gouwekanaal is nog altijd een drukbevaren kanaal. De Oude Gouwe alleen nog in gebruik voor pleziervaart.
