14. Mallegatssluis

Varend op de Hollandse IJssel zie je aan linkerkant, net na de fabriek van Unichema, de Mallegatsluis. De Mallegatsluis verbindt de Hollandse IJssel met de Gouwe via de Turfsingel en is erkend als gemeentelijk monument. Deze sluis is nog steeds in gebruik maar door de hefdeuren wel beperkt in doorvaarhoogte. Vanaf ongeveer 1400 is er op deze plek al een sluis. Het gebruik van de sluis is vaak omstreden geweest, omdat de stad Gouda veel wilde te verdienen aan de passerende schepen. Tot omstreeks 1936 was dit dan ook een van de drukste sluizen van Nederland. Na de aanleg van de Julianasluis is de Mallegatsluis alleen nog van belang voor pleziervaart en schepen die in de haven liggen. De naam Mallegat komt van het Middelnederlandse ‘malen’, wat tijd verbeuzelen betekent. In het Mallegat mocht men namelijk wel varen, maar men mocht er vanwege een stedelijk voorschrift niet doorheen varen.
